Matka Silk
Matka Silk
Matka Silk is one of Bengal’s most distinctive silk traditions, known for its raw texture, subtle irregularity and understated elegance.

Origin & Character
Matka Silk originates from the Malda and Murshidabad regions of West Bengal, where silk production has been a part of the cultural and economic fabric for centuries. Unlike refined silk varieties, Matka silk is created from pierced cocoons, resulting in a yarn that is thicker, uneven and rich in character.
The Craft Process
The process begins with reeling silk from pierced cocoons, which are spun into a coarser yarn compared to traditional silk. This yarn is then handwoven on looms to produce a fabric that retains a natural slubbed texture — a defining feature of Matka silk.
The irregularity in the yarn gives the fabric its unique visual depth and tactile richness, making each piece distinct. The fabric is breathable, durable and carries a quiet, organic beauty.
Contemporary Expression
Today, Matka silk is widely used across sarees, stoles and home textiles. Its raw aesthetic makes it especially relevant for modern design sensibilities that value texture, imperfection and authenticity.
From the BONGONIKETAN Studio
At BONGONIKETAN, we work closely with artisan clusters in Malda and Murshidabad to bring Matka silk to contemporary audiences. Through these collaborations, we celebrate the raw beauty of the fabric while preserving the integrity of traditional weaving practices.
