Madhur Kathi
Madurkathi (Madur Mats)
Madurkathi represents one of Bengal’s traditional handwoven crafts and received Geographical Indication (GI) recognition in 2018. The craft is practiced primarily in the Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, where artisans have been weaving fine mats from natural reed for generations.
Origin & Craft Tradition
The weaving of Madurkathi mats has long been associated with rural Bengal, where the craft evolved as an essential part of everyday life. These mats, traditionally used for sitting and sleeping, are valued for their cooling properties, durability and natural texture.
Over time, Madurkathi weaving developed into a refined craft, with artisans creating intricate patterns and designs that elevate these mats from utilitarian objects to pieces of cultural expression.
The Craft Process
The process begins with the cultivation and harvesting of madur kathi reed, which is then dried, split and processed into fine strands. These strands may be naturally dyed and carefully arranged before being woven on traditional looms.
The weaving technique requires precision and rhythm, resulting in smooth, flexible mats that often feature geometric patterns and subtle colour contrasts.
Contemporary Relevance
Today, Madurkathi products are used beyond their traditional purpose, finding place in modern homes as table runners, wall decor and lifestyle accessories. Their eco-friendly nature and minimal design align with contemporary preferences for sustainable living.
