Handmade (Mukhauta) Chhau Mask - Tribal Couple
Chhau mask is a traditional craft of West Bengal and is mainly by the artisans of Sutradhār community representing the local culture. These masks are vibrant, colourful and ornamented, mainly used in Chhau dance as props representing mythological depicted by these masks include the goddess Durga, goddess Kali and the demon Mahishasura as well as figures from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana like Krishna, Arjuna, Lakshmana, Kartik, Ram, Sita and more. The base of these masks are made up of paper, glue and the facial features are made up of clay. After completing the moulds and sun drying process, these masks are coloured and decorated by the artisans for final finish.
